There are rare instances in sports where a game ends, we log the final score, and mark the game as Final in our API, only to have the final play of the game reviewed and overturned, changing the final score. The perfect example of this was the an NBA game on October 17, 2017, between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors, where a buzzer-beater shot was reviewed and overturned, changing the final score of the game after it was set to Final in our system.
Because of these edge cases, we're recommending a revised workflow. We added fields to our game & box score APIs that indicate whether a game has been closed out by our internal validation team. Only games that are closed should be considered as Final. Please allow 15-20 minutes of a game ending to be marked closed.
Please refer to the following fields on each sport's API below.
- NFL Score.Closed
- MLB Game.IsClosed
- NBA Game.IsClosed
- NHL Game.IsClosed
You might notice that NFL has a different column name, because it was added a few years ago. The other sports are consistent. We haven't implemented this feature for soccer or the college sports, but perhaps we'll do so in the future.
